Small Society Lab 2012: Panel and Workshops

The SerenA Project has been invited to be a partner in this years ‘Small Society Lab 2012′.

WHAT IS THE SMALL SOCIETY LAB?
SSL2012 is a pop up research space to connect art, design and technology and communities situated in the Visual Research Centre (VRC) in Dundee Contemporary Arts (DCA). Throughout June SSL will bring together artists, designers, scientists, community activists and members of the great Dundonian public to explore ideas that exist on the boundaries of art, science and community.

A lively debate with members of the SerenA Team and guests about the challenges of Serendipity in todays digital society.

14.00  -  16.30 Workshop: Chasing Serendipity with Linked Open Data
Lab Leaders Jamie Forth (QMUL) and Rob Stewart (Heriot-Watt)

Description
Are you interested in Linked Open Data (LOD) and the vision for the semantic web that is becoming reality right now? With all BBC programming, Wikipedia (DBpedia) as well as museums, libraries, cultural and heritage organisations adopting LOD, this workshop will provide hands-on experience of working with semantic information published as Linked Open Data (LOD). The workshop will culminate in the sharing of discoveries and the strategies used to uncover them.
Participate
Programmers with some experience of LOD/RDF/OWL/SPARQL,  Programmers who might not have any LOD/RDF/OWL/SPARQL experience.
Curators of data (eg archives, collections in cultural heritage, research across any discipline), who might want to explore the possibilities of what LOD could be.
Essential requirements: laptop, text editor and browser.
Non-essential requirements: command line, Java (or any other language of your choice) experience for more advanced hacking.

Description
Are you interested in the elusive phenomenon of serendipity in everyday life, community, creative practice and research? Serendipity “The faculty of making happy and unexpected discoveries by accident” [OED], and Pasteurs description “In the field of observation, chance favours only the prepared mind.” describe emotion and an open state of mind as important factors in making valuable connections. What constitutes the prepared mind, in preparation for Serendipity? Explore stories, experiences, tools and technologies for facilitating serendipity, and build individual experience models for reflection. The workshop will culminate in a shared space for serendipity and strategies to apply that in individual practice or building communities.
Participate
▪ Creative Practioners who are interested in the role that serendipity plays in their practice.
▪ Academics and researchers
▪ Member of the Public who are interested in the role of serendipity and community

Other Participating Communities are:
*The Sung Community - building communities and music, lead by the Mercury Prize nominated musician Kenny Anderson (AKA King Creosote).
*The Sourdough Community – the role of micro-organisms as community partners, lead by Clive Gillman and a host of bakers and yeast specialists.
*The Doppelganger Community – the role of twin cities, lead by Lorens Holm.
*The Visionary Community– how do we develop a vision of a community cultural project.
