Understanding ‘Delight’ in Design

What are ‘delightful’ interfaces? Do they exist? Could ‘delightful’ interfaces inspire serendipitous moments? If yes, how does this affect the user experience? Is ‘delight’ in design something measurable in strict terms? Or do we observe and understand  ‘delight’ through its effects in our feelings?

Many people could say that we surely get ‘delight’ from serendipitous moments…could the opposite happen? And if yes, when and how…?

Is ‘delight’ as a concept a synonym of ‘user satisfaction’ or maybe not?

Such topics and many more questions around the concept of ‘delight’ in HCI and interactive design will be discussed through presentations and highly interactive activities in our forthcoming 1st International Workshop on “Understanding Delight in Design: User Experience, Technologies and Tools” held at HCI 2012 – People and Computers XXVI, 12-14th September 2012. The official website of the workshop is the following:

The workshop date has been confirmed. It will take place on Monday, 10th September 2012 at the University of Birmingham. We are looking forward to seeing you there!
