Bee building

I was working on the design of a façade for an energy-saving university building and had a number of design requirements (such as the need to incorporate a courtyard to act as a meeting place and natural ventilation) and constraints (such as the need to suit the ‘morphology’ of the city – where existing university buildings gradually went from low-rise to high-rise within the campus). While working on the design, I happened to watch a BBC documentary on honey bees, which gave me the idea of using the hexagonal shape present in beehives as a ‘building block’ for the building façade.
