Right Place, Right Job

I had spent an enchanting 10 months doing a maternity cover contract at an advertising agency. The company itself was fantastically creative and exciting but the people, they felt like long lost family by my 2nd week at the job.

It was a sad day for all when I had to leave and I knew (having worked in finance) that they were in no position to ‘create me a role out of thin air’ in order for me to stay on. So, I said teary goodbyes and began my search for my next rung of the ladder.

After 6 weeks of interviews, temping and plenty of daytime TV, I received a text from my previous boss asking if I could cover 1 day a week up until Christmas. Not wanting to sound available I reeled off all the ‘exciting’ things I hoped to have on the horizon and that my availability would be sparing, but nevertheless, I might be able to pop in that Thursday.

I reluctantly returned to my old haunt that morning, having just found out I had missed out on a job I was sure was a dead cert, and, attempting to put on a brave face, decided to not speak of it. Within minutes I felt like I was ‘home’ and, feeling somewhat emotional, decided to vent honestly to my (old) boss about what a struggle the last 6 weeks had been.

He went on to say, with me sat there feeling somewhat embarrassed, that he couldn’t be happier as he really wanted me to come back to the company as another (very exciting) position was just about to open, that he wasn’t going to mention as he thought I had moved on.

And now here I am, Monday afternoon, and couldn’t be happier!

Serendipity, coincidence or just a karmic reward for honesty? Whatever it is, I’m very grateful it happened.
